Abstract

In the rural areas of El Salvador, cattle ranching stands out as a means of livelihood. This activity, brought by the Spanish conquistadors through the introduction of cattle, has lasted through time to the present day, with almost 500 years of uninterrupted activity in the Salvadoran countryside. Among the types of cattle raising in the country, subsistence cattle raising stands out, which due to its intrinsic characteristics is a vulnerable productive sector that faces threats such as climate change, rising production inputs, lack of protection and few state incentives to produce. This paper shows how the diversification of the livestock production system through silvopastoral systems and the adoption of climatically adapted breeds can be a feasible option to provide sustainability to this type of production system, which is the most characteristic, but at the same time the most threatened of Salvadoran livestock.
