Abstract

This article reports on the current state of scientific production from the Higher Education Institutions of El Salvador, in central american context and according to the Ibero-American ranking. The considered period corresponds to the decade from 2008 to 2018, after 4 SCimago Institutions Rankings (SIR) reports, published in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2020, by CSimago Reseach Group, reviewed for the purpose of analyzing the evolution of university scientific production in the country. In this paper we describe and analyze the report’s indicators for the salvadorean universities, including the University of El Salvador, the only public University in the country, in comparison with the public Central American universities, which are member of the Central American Universities Council, CSUCA. The analysis of the situation raises unpromising conditions to promote a better positioning of university scientific production, both in the country context and at the regional and iberoamerican leve, unless the underlying structural conditions could be transformed.
