Abstract

The functional diversity of ecosystems, understood as the variety of traits and roles performed by organisms within a system, constitutes the guiding principle of their resilience and adaptability. This essay transfers that ecological principle to the field of university education in biological sciences, arguing that a school operating as a mechanism of standardization produces the equivalent of functional impoverishment: interchangeable professionals who are fragile in the face of complexity. Taking the siphonophore (a cnidarian colony whose strength lies precisely in the non-interchangeable specialization of its zooids) as the central metaphor, it is proposed that the Salvadoran community of biologists requires an analogous functional diversity to confront the country’s socioecological challenges. It is concluded that the ethical responsibility of the School of Biology at the University of El Salvador lies in cultivating the uniqueness of each student, treating them not as a mold to be filled, but as a chrysalis with its own potential for differentiation.
